However, do not mix hungry leeches with fed leeches, as they might cannibalize each other and suck each other's blood. In a 2-litter leech jar you can keep up to 20-30 leeches safely. Leeches will develop perfectly fine in the same tank, just do not overcrowd them. Enjoy your leech purchase.

A. Hematoma in dogs and cats is a very common disease. Most people who treat hematoma on their pets, use the largest leeches available, between 5-10 of them. This will ensure that the most blood is sucked from the hematoma bump and the hematoma will heal-up faster and also apply 5 leaches two weeks later to ensure that animal's hear will re-grow on that spot.

A. Leeches are kept alive by taking care of them really well. You need to keep their water clean and feed them with freshly - drank blood every 6 months. 

A. The North American leeches release clear slime in excess, so this is normal for them. What you need to do is change their water, to get rid of the slime. As long as the North American leech is hanging on the wall of its leech jar, it should be ok.

A. No, leeches of different species can not bread with each other. For example the Hirudo leech varieties are all cousins and can interbreed amongst each other. North American leeches are Macrobdella Decora and the Transylvania Dracula variety is of this family, so they can mix. Next Buffalo Leeches are Hirudinaria Maniliansis and they can only bread with other Buffalo Leeches only. Lastly Turtle and Tiger leeches are completely different species all together and can not interbreed with any of the others. 

A. Leeches do regurgitate their ingested blood on occasion, when their living conditions are not right. For example they might have to much sunlight, they might feel too warm, when they are overcrowded or when their water is dirty. Make sure non of these conditions are present, so that your leeches do not vomit their food.

A. Leeches will latch onto your fish and feed off of it, yes. Your poor fish will lose its eyesight first, because since leeches cannot latch onto fish scales, they go for the eyes! They also love to feed off of frogs and live cattle.

A. In summer, we only ship leeches to Florida with a Live-Arrival Guarantee, using overnight shipping. In this case 100% of the leeches survive and arrive alive. If you choose any other shipping method, you are running a great risk and with the cheapest shipping method, your leeches will probably have a 0% chance of making it alive, so best to go with Overnight. After September, leeches sent to Florida using the cheapest means, have a much better chance of surviving, since temperatures are below 25 degrees Celsius. 

A. The absorbent pads are for the bleeding that occurs after the leech feeding. Leeches are fed with the blood of living mammals, so naturally, you might want to use pads to absorb the blood flow afterwards, which may take up to 10-12 hours to subside.

A. If your Hirudo leeches are kept in room-temperature water, inside an air-conditioned room - they will live a long life indeed. However if you keep them cool, your leeches will be prompted to release more of their green excrement into their own water. Over time, their excrement being of pH not suitable for them, your leeches will get poisoned by it. This means, you would either have to change your leeches' water more often and increase the volume of water in which you keep them, or you would need to keep them someplace cool, so they excrete less and maintain a healthy lifestyle. We do not recommend you keep leeches in the refrigerator as the icy-cold water will eventually deform them and they are more likely to die prematurely. The best concentration is: 100 leeches to a 10-litter leech bucket (leech lodge or aquarium), kept at room temperature, inside a cool air-conditioned room. This lodge needs to have a water change weekly and your leeches will enjoy excellent heath!

A. Leeches are shipped from several different locations, depending on where you are ordering from. We will dispatch your leeches the same week you order, unless you have chosen the overnight leech shipping, which dispatches daily. We buy our leeches from biopfarm wholesalers, to distribute to customers. If you are uncertain of the quality of our product, you may order from other leech selling sites and compare the results.

A. Medium leeches may or may not leave a scar on the skin. It depends on which the leech is placed on. As an example, scars occur on the stomach area and remain and there are never any scars left on the back of the neck. Discuss any medical application with a trained hirudotherapist, to ensure proper application techniques.

A. Leeches can be fed as frequently as once per month, when they are babies (0-3 months). They gradually decrease their feeding frequency need, as their age progresses. When they are aged 6 months to 1-year old they can be fed every 3 months. Once they reach 1 years of age, leeches can drink blood as seldom as once every 6 months. After 1.5-2 yeas old and onward, leeches need only be fed by bloodsucking on a mammal only once per year.

For example, if you are going to feed your leech on your dog or cat, you would shave the area for feeding, as the leech prefers bare skin to attach itself on, and let your leech crawl around that area. Once the leech is securely attached, it starts to suck blood and it will drop off on its own when its done. You may also feed your leeches artificially, by stuffing an empty intestine with blood, however, this option is not advisable, as leeches do not prefer it. They much prefer a firm, live body to suck their blood from. If leeches are fed on humans, small leeches will not leave a scar, but medium and large leeches may leave scars on your body. There are places on the body where scars do not occur, such as the back of the neck area.

A. Leeches originate from the leech pharms of Europe and they are large because they have been fed on certified beef.

A. Any mammal bitten by a leech will continue to bleed for a period of 10 to 12 hours. The quantity of blood is minimal, as the blood is not said to even "bleed" but rather, it "oozes" out in very tiny quantities over a long period of time.

A. Leeches excrements are greenish brown in color. If you see a red excrement, it means your leech has regurgitated blood. This means something in its conditions was not quite right. You might have kept it in the sunlight or not enough air inside the jar... or water had too much chlorox, we cannot know exactly what has happened in the conditions which you have made for her. If you send us a better explanation, we might be able to guess what perhaps might have killed your leech.

A. There is a leech scar video that shows that large size leeches will leave scars if you let them feed on your body. In this case, small leeches are much preferred, as they do not leave any scars and bumps whatsoever.

A. Hello Robert, we are not sure where you would go to acquire Haementeria ghilianii leeches unfortunately, sorry! Perhaps try searching the countries where these leech species naturally occur.

A. Leeches only suck blood once every 3-6 months. The rest of the time they spend in rest, digesting their ingested blood and sometimes hibernation. Water needs changed only when it gets dirty, i.e. once a week. Any more frequent water changes will rob the leech of its vital elements and nutrients necessary for survival.

A. This sounds great Ben! Leeches tend to drop off when they are completely full. 

A. Leeches release a special substance that prevents the blood of the host from clotting, therefore, the place on which the leech has fed will continue bleed for upwards of 10 hours. There is no known way to clot or stop the bleeding. Hirudo leeches are neither males nor females, they are in fact hermafrodites. When they mate, they take on the role of the opposing sexes.

A. The buffalo leeches feed similar to the Hirudo Verbana leeches, you make a prick to the host's skin and the smell of blood will attract the leech to bite. The hirudinaria Manliensis is a lot harder to trick to bite, than the regular European leeches.

A. Hello, did you purchase moss and a hanging bed for the pregnant leech to crawl in and out of the half-full and half-wet moss? If you do not create this type of environment for the pregnant leeches, they will absorb the pregnancy. Furthermore, if you failed to do this, combine all 3 leeches together with these conditions, and they will mate this spring and hopefully another one will get pregnant.

A. Leeches are not feed with liver, they are bloodsuckers, they only suck blood from live mammals.

A. Feeding pet leeches on liver is not a suitable practice, as bloodsucking leeches do not feed on anything, except suck blood from living mammals. Hirudo Leeches also do not "drink" blood from containers. Leeches can be handled without biting, if you move them around quickly in your hands. Their suckers can be unlatched easily by lifting them up gently with the tip of the fingernails. However, leeches that are already biting their host, cannot and should not be unlatched by force. It those cases, it is best to let them drink until they reach fullness and drop off on their own. Another unlatch method is to drop pure lemon juice on its front sucker, and the leech should release its grip immediately and crawl away from the lemon juice.

A. Your pet leech can safely latch and feed on any mammal. Some people use frogs for feeding, among other living hosts. Hirudo Leeches can also live up to 1 year without feeding.
