Leech Questions & Answers

Q. Hi, I am looking at purchasing around 100 leeches. I would like to find out what the best sort of enclosure would be? There is a lot of conflicting advice such as they will feed on each other, they will not develop correctly with too many in the same tank. Advice will be appreciated. Thanks

A. You can keep up to 200 leeches in the same leech bucket and nobody will cannibalize in that environment. However, do not mix hungry leeches with fed leeches, as they might cannibalize each other and suck each other's blood. In a 2-litter leech jar you can keep up to 20-30 leeches safely. Leeches will develop perfectly fine in the same tank, just do not overcrowd them. Enjoy your leech purchase.

Q. Such lovely leeches! They all arrived happy and healthy. I wasn't prepared for what an ordeal the transfer from shipping to their large jars would be, it took a couple hours, haha they are already teaching me patience. They kept suctioning to my glove and it would be very challenging to get them off, I ended up using chop sticks (gently of course) as they were less prone to stick to them. Do you have any advice for me, I am about to do my next cleaning and would like to care for them to the best of my abilities, it sounds like I need to remove all of them and sterilize or can I keep some in a different container that I will use soon. The book goes somewhat into this but any additional info you have would be fantastic. Is the consultant available for me to get advice from as I learn? Thank you so much for providing these amazing creatures, I find their beauty to be mesmerizing.

A. Using the leech forceps is the easiest way to handle leeches. Be sure to purchase a pair today. You cannot work properly without leech forceps, we highly recommend them. We are happy to hear that your leeches arrived alive, happy and healthy.

Q. Ok so what is the difference between the cosmetic leech and the medicinal leech? And what species is the medicinal leeches?

A. Cosmetic leeches are same Hirudo leeches as the large and medium once. The difference is just their size. Cosmetic leeches are very close to the baby size leech. Medicinal leeches are bloodsucking Hirudo leeches, that are meant to be used for medical procedures. We hope this clarifies things for you.

Q. Will a gold fish suffice for feeding leeches? If not can you name a particular fish that we can use.

A. Fish with scales will not be suitable for feeding your leeches. The leech will bite the fish on its eyes, because the cannot bite them throw the scales. Therefore, your fish will go blind and the leech will not be well-fed. The best option for you is to feed the fish on a large animal or any living mammal.

Q. I am shopping for a fish to feeding them when they arrive , will a goldfish work well? Can you suggest a fish... we were going to set the small aquarium up with fish. I don't want the fish to eat the leech. We are totally new to the handling of animals / pets. My son came up with this project for science and I m just trying to make it as successful as possible. The death of the last bunch frustrated him and he lost interest. I felt we were ill prepared last time and I want to change that this time. Thanks for your help and cooperation.

A. Besides feeding your leeches on live mammals you can also buy an empty intestine and fill it up with animal blood and let your leeches suck on that.

Q. OK if baby leeches feed best from the bite of a parent leech, can they not sustain their on bite to a mammal? I just order more baby leeches because the first babies all died after transfer. I want my next order to be successful, I m thinking we should have order more mature leeches if the babies cant make their own bite. If you can response quickly perhaps there will be time to modify my order before it ships. Thank you for your advice.

A. Hello George, we will include a slightly larger size this time, and we will give you 8 free, to make up for your loss from last time.

Q. Hi, We aren't using the leeches for human blood sucking purposes. What can we feeding them? We ordered baby leeches. We were considering worms, is this okay or can you recommend something else. My son is using them in a science experiment and we want to measure their growth. Also how can you tell a leech is hungry?

A. Leeches only feed on living mammals. You can feed your leeches on frogs, cattle, fish, house pets, turtles and humans. Leeches feed every 3-6 months. Bloodsucking leeches do not eat worms. Baby leeches will feed on the same bite side as left from an adult leech. There is artificial ways of feeding them also, this involves filling intestines with animal blood and letting the leeches suck on the intestine. However this option is not preferred by them.

Q. i know you are not supposed to but can feed leeches store bought meat? What kind can i use?

A. Leeches do not eat meat. Bloodsucking leeches only drink blood from a living mammal or suck from a blood-filled intestine.

Q. I have 2 inch long and fat leeches in my soil where i grow plants. Some one told me they suck on your plants roots. I have papaya plant and other fruit and flower plants. Should i kill them or let them stay if they are harmless?

A. Are your papaya plants planted in marshlands? Do they grow in swamp lands? If so then leeches might  swim in between the plants. However, they do not suck on any roots. They only suck on the blood of living mammals. Leeches are not vegetarian. They are parasitic creatures.

Q. Hi we are using leeches for medical purposes. Please tell me what size are medium, small and large leeches. Also we order every time around $300 worth of leaches. How much will be shipping cost and how long turn around to Brooklyn? Thank you. Gary

A. Sizes of leeches are relative, because they are very stretchy animals and we pick out a good mix of leach sizes if you buy a budget package on sale. Right now our newest batch of leech stock is rather large. So you will be getting mostly large leeches if you buy today. Shipping cost vary, depending on the plan you pick. The slowest and cheapest option is USPS 3-4 day delivery. It costs $15. The next shipping plan is the same, but with the live guarantee, which is $45 and the last and the fastest shipping option is the overnight courier delivery, which is $85, and your leech order will be with you the following day. So buy with confidence and enjoy your leeches!

Q. What leech is best to treat dog ear hematoma?

A. Hematoma in dogs and cats is a very common disease. Most people who treat hematoma on their pets, use the largest leeches available, between 5-10 of them. This will ensure that the most blood is sucked from the hematoma bump and the hematoma will heal-up faster and also apply 5 leaches two weeks later to ensure that animal's hear will re-grow on that spot.

Q. Hello me and my girlfriend just received a north american leech last night and we kept it in a mason jar with air holes in it. We read that tap water might be ok for it and we live in Oregon where the tap is pretty clean. I notice there is a tad bit of paint on the inside of the lid. Late last night we noticed it was clinging to the wall above the water and then later on seemed a bit lifeless. I noticed clear goop on the wall where it was and when i touched it with my finger it was still attached to the leech. We are terrified we might have killed it with mishandling it but are hopeful it just shed its skin and is hibernating maybe? Its skin is really tight on its body and it is on the bottom of the jar and is not responsive at all. Please respond ASAP so we can determine if we need to order a new one.

A. The North American leeches release clear slime in excess, so this is normal for them. What you need to do is change their water, to get rid of the slime. As long as the North American leech is hanging on the wall of its leech jar, it should be ok.

Q. How large do your jumbo leeches get? How large do they come? What kind of leech is the jumbo leech? It is been getting colder here as it is fall, will they die if I order them this season?

A. The Jumbo leeches will potentially become as large as the Dracula size leech, if you feed them regularly. They can withstand enormously cold weather, just not frost. The Jumbo leaches are regular bloodsucking Hirudo Liiches.

Q. Urgent??? I put my leech in a jar with 3 air holes in it and put Oregon tap water in it (known for being pretty clean) and it was doing ok for a few hours but now at 11 its at the bottom of the jar all tight - it was hanging on the lid for like 2 hours earlier? Im worried should i just get spring water???

A. Leeches can live in regular tap water. No special spring water is needed. Depending on what variety leach you have purchased we can tell you the normal behavior of the leech. If you have the North American liich they prefer cold water. If you bought the Buffalo Leech, it likes warm water and if you ordered the Hirudo Leech, it will be ok in warm ok cold water. Without a picture of your leech we cannot tell if it is alive or not. Normally, it should be hanging on the wall of the jar.

Leeches.com

Q. We just got our north american leech today (its winter in Oregon) we heard you aren't supposed to feed them in winter and its mid fall should we feed it or no?

Where do your leeches come from? I wanted to make sure i was getting hirudo ones to make sure they did the job. Thank you very much.

A. Yes all of our leiches are Hirudo bloodsucking leeches. People who use them for medical purposes, do so under the supervision of a medical doctor or a certified hirudotherapist.

Regards,

Leeches.com

Q. I take medicine, SSR's, for my mental health. Is it possible that this could harm the leech, if it were to feed off of me? What else should I avoid putting on my skin or in my blood stream before feeding?

A. No it is not possible for the leech to get harmed by the contents of your blood. The leech has its own defensive mechanisms, so do not worry about that. You should always avoid smoking cigarets, drinking coffee and eating dairy and meat, especially consuming alcohol as this will interfere with the purity of your blood and healing.

Q. What are the best type of leeches to get for blood pressure treatment?

A. Please consult with your medical doctor about your blood pressure condition, as we can not issue medical advice. We have heard that most people who treat this disease, place them behind their ears.

Q. How do you tell if a leech is pregnant?

Q. I'm interested in buying a couple of jumbo leeches sometime in the future. Around how long will they live? And to feed them, do I just place them on my arm and let them have their fill? Is it also alright to have two hungry leeches in the same tank?

A. Yes it is perfectly all right to have all your hungry leeches in the same tank, and all your full leeches in another leech container, so they do not cannibalise. Leeches live 4-5 years. You can feed your leaches on any living mammal.

Q. Can the different species breed with each other? For example can the hirudo, american, and Transylvania leeches breed?

A. No, leeches of different species can not bread with each other. For example the Hirudo leech varieties are all cousins and can interbreed amongst each other. North American leeches are Macrobdella Decora and the Transylvania Dracula variety is of this family, so they can mix. Next Buffalo Leeches are Hirudinaria Maniliansis and they can only bread with other Buffalo Leeches only. Lastly Turtle and Tiger leeches are completely different species all together and can not interbreed with any of the others.

Q. Hi, i fed my leech two days ago and today it appears to be throwing up blood. is this normal or is it going to end up dying soon?

A. Leeches do regurgitate their ingested blood on occasion, when their living conditions are not right. For example they might have to much sunlight, they might feel too warm, when they are overcrowded or when their water is dirty. Make sure non of these conditions are present, so that your leeches do not vomit their food.

Q. Hi, I bought some leeches off here less than a month ago, and one of the ones who I fed became very lethargic and had a lot of knots in it's body. Yesterday it began vomiting a lot and this morning I noticed a small, white string like protrusion coming out of the leech. I suspect it may be some sort of worm, and I would like to know a)am I safe from these worms. b)are my other leeches safe from these worms. c) If I am infected with these worms, what should I do?

A. We had never heard or seen leeches with worms. Please feel free to send us a picture at info@leeches.org

Q. I am planning on setting up a communal leech enclosure, and I have a few questions. How large do Hungarian leeches get, do they reach Dracula size? Can they breed with the American leeches and Transylvania leeches? I don't know how to care for babies, so I don't want that. Also what is the scientific name of the Transylvania leeches? Thanks so much.

A. Transylvanian leeches are Macrobdella Decora and Hungarian leeches are "Hirudo", no you can not interbreed them. Hungarian leeches can never reach Dracula size, because they are not the same species. Lastly baby leeches are fed after the adults, as they attach to the same site.

Q. How we can grow up leech in small flat? I mean which rule we have to obey or i need to learn how i can do that.!? do appreciate.

A. To keep leeches and raise them in a small apartment or a flat all you need to do is buy the leech buckets from leeches.com and stack them on top of each other and you can fit up to twenty buckets like this against the wall in your apartment, on three levels. You then need to change the leeches water weekly to keep them alive and healthy and you need to feed them once every six months or once per a year. To feed the leeches you can place them on a living mammal.

Q. What do you feed your leeches before they are shipped to customers?

A. Leeches.com does not feed its leeches before shipping them to our customers. We receive our leech stock hungry from the bio farms of Europes and we dispatch them to same way - hungry. We do not get involved in their feeding process as this is the bio-farm's job. Fed leeches are not suitable for shipping, as they are full of blood, very heavy and they stay idle all day long. Hungry leeches are the only usable condition we trade in.

Q. Hi there, I am just wondering if North American leeches you sell have the same health benefits when used medically as European hyrudo medicinal leeches? Do they have the same heeling qualities?

A. North American leeches (Macrobdella Decora) is a species of leech that can be used medicinally by the medical establishments, however they have not been approved for medical use by the FDA of United States. Therefore, North American leeches are not normally utilized medically. Furthermore, this type of leech is very difficult to trick to bite the human skin. They wonder around aimlessly on the skin and take forever to make the decision to pierce the skin. North American leeches make the best pets and children love them for there large size and gorgeous coloring on the back which features a greenish brown hue with light colored dots.

Nevertheless, keep in mind that baby leeches can not pierce the skin independently without the help adult leeches around them. If you choose to use your leech medically, you will proceed at your own risk, as we do not advise you use them on yourself without the supervision of a trained hirudotherapist or a medical leech therapy professional.

Q. H, I am new to Hirudo therapy, and would need the leeches strictly for medical purpose: increasing blood circulation, detox and etc. Which size of leeches would you recommend to start with? Also, can the leeches sustain at the room temperature, and can/should be leeches be re-used.

A. We recommend you consult with hirudotherapy professional ( leech therapist ) before using our leeches medically. Leech therapists use different size leeches depending on the area of the body they are applied to. Baby and small leeches are considered cosmetic and they are usually used for the face and delicate areas of the body. Large leeches and jumbos are normally applied to the legs and the lower parts of the body, because the skin there is more coarse. Medium sizes are most predominantly used everywhere else however this is not medical advice. Yes leaches can live at room temperature comfortably. Leeches can only be used multiple times by the same mammal or person.

Q. Is it possible to get leeches during the winter for ice fishing?

A. Of course, leeches are perfectly shippable for winter and you can use them for ice fishing. Just select your bait leech package on leeches.com and buy it. Leeches can be used either fat or hungry. Leeches full of blood are better for fishing because they attract marine predators from a long distance. Fed leeches are the perfect bait for Catfish, Pike, Whitefish, Perch.

Q. So, I am getting interested in owning a leech. But, I do have a question. Do Medicinal Leeches ever feed on dangerous spots on the body? Or do they generally feed on spots that won't be life-threatening? Sorry if this question is not worded to well!

A. Leeches always find the most problematic area of the body to feed on. This means they are looking for the warmest blood. It is thought that the warmest places of the human body are those with active infections or inflammations, so in fact, the leech is attracted to the diseased part of the mammal's body to feed off of. This is why leeches are thought to draw out bad blood or stale blood or puss and infection from the host body.

We hope this answers your question and let us know if you have any more!

Q. I am a medicinal leeches practician . I would like to know if all of leeches medicinal and could be used on humans. Are they certified?

A. Leeches have been used traditionally in hirudotherapy (aka leech therapy) dating back thousands of years. We always recommend that you consult with a certified hirudotherapist before using leeches medically. Leeches have been approved by the FDA to be used in leech therapy, however this is not the scope of our website. We do not issue certificates, we do not issue medical advise nor consult people on how to use their leeches. A lot of customers nowadays seek to buy leeches as pets.

Q. Hi, There,You've sent me one notification about subscribing to your mailing list and two advertisements since then -- since I inadvertently signed up to your subscription based on inputting my e-mail address into a window displaying 14% off WITHOUT mention of subscription. So, why you're sending me advertisements, I don't understand.Aside from sending me advertisements, I did e-mail you Friday. That e-mail is a continuation of e-mail exchanges. In that e-mail I asked seven or so questions and haven't received your answers to those questions. I would like to place an order. In stead of sending me advertisements, would you send me an e-mail answering my questions? That way, I can place my order. If you're not who answered my previous e-mails, would you pass this e-mail of mine and the one containing my seven or so questions to who did answer my e-mails?Thank you. Gary

Q. About the leeches, I'm considering buying two jumbo or large leeches or two of each. Before I do, I'd like to know more about them. Here are my questions about them 1) What is the size of the jumbo leech before feeding and what is it after feeding?2) What is the size of the large leech before feeding and what is it after feeding? 3) What size of container would you place them in to live? Also, would you separate the jumbo leech and/or large leech from all leeches of other sizes, you know, leeches smaller than these two kinds?rn4) On average, how much blood do they remove? 5) On average, how long do they feed? 6) When the jumbo and large leech bites, do their bites hurt? 7) How many days is normal delivery? I'm interested in co-ordinating my order to how many days are taken for leech arrival. I'd like to avoid ordering when Sunday is involved in shipment because Sunday is without mailing, so the leeches would sit for a day, that day, Sunday, rather than be in shipment constantly. If they sit, would they be in hot temperature? I don't know and it's what I want to avoid for them. 8) I recall you said you offer overnight delivery, one-day delivery and two-day delivery. What are their prices? 9) Someone at leeches.com said I may choose to have my leeches delivered to Walgreens. That could be a good option. Is leech delivery to Walgreen more successful than it is to homes, meaning are there far more episodes of delivery that every leech is alive when delivered to Walgreens rather than to homes? I understand I asked many questions. I hope you can answer them fairly soon, though. Why I say that is because I e-mailed them Thursday (August 9) and haven't heard back. Much time has been lost. Thank you for your time and help answering my questions. Gary

A. 1. The size of a Jumbo leech before feeding is just a regular Jumbo leech. After feeding it will go as mush as a Dracula Leech 2. Each leech grows 9-10 times its original size after the feeding of a blood meal 3.You can just use a regular glass jar or leech jar as sold on Leeches.com 4. Leeches remove around 10 grams of blood per feeding and also another 10 gr from bleeding afterwords 5. Leeches feed 20-45 min on average 6. The biting of the Large and Jumbo leech can indeed be felt more-so than the baby and the small leech 7. Normal delivery of leeches ordered online will take on average 3-4 days. We not longer deliver to Walgreen. We only offer this in summer when it is hot. You are welcome hope this help.

Q. We have just been introduced to the leech modality for alternative medicine at home. I'm told by a practitioner here that we should use 15 of them over a period of 2 weeks...basically to apply 2 leeches every other day. Is there any harm in continuing that if I were to order from you? How many more days might be considered typical? rn

A. Unfortunately we can not provide any medical advice, whatever the therapist recommended to you this is what you should follow and anymore or less might be harmful to your health. We have heard of russian healers using up to 60 leeches in one session, but we can not confirm this.

Q. Are the mini leeches, giant draculas, and hungarian leeches different species? If so, can they coexist together or do they need to be separate? And can they breed with one another (I only want at max. 3 to keep as pets and I thought having a variety of them could be cool. However I don't want them to hurt one another nor breed.

A. All our leeches on offer right now are the HIRUDO variety bloodsucking leech. We sometimes carry in stock the following types of leech also: Buffalo Leech (Hirudinaria Maniliensis) Turtle Leech (Ozobranchus margoi & Ozobranchus branchiatus) and Orientalis Leeches. We do not recommend you keep different species together, as they will have differing behaviors and habits and may decide to cannibalize each other or prey on each other. You also do not want to mix fed leeches with hungry ones as this will inevitably lead to unwanted consequences and loss of lives in some of your leeches.

Q. When stating small, medium, large, extra large what are the average length or weight on these items? And as per the leeches as individuals do you only sell one species other than the buffalos? Do you sell baby buffalos?

A. We do not measure the leeches, as their body length varies due to stretching out and contracting. We sell leeches by size, which is determined by age. Babies are newborn sterile leeches. Mediums are just a few months old and as you go into large, extra large, jumbo and Dracula, they increase in age, all the way up to 3-4 years old. We also sell baby buffalo leeches and baby North American Leeches, when they are in stock!

Q. Hi, guys, I'm replying to your automated e-mail. I submitted my e-mail address inside a pop-up window on your website that advertises 14% off an order. The e-mail your website sent is without mention of that discount. As well, your advertisement didn't display anything about subscription. It was about the discount only. Because your automated e-mail mentions nothing about the discount is why I'm writing you to ask, Will the 14% discount be applied to my purchase? About the leeches, I'm considering buying one or two jumbo or large leeches, or one or two of each Before I do, I'd like to know more about them. I understand my number of questions here can be considered many. Please know I thank you for your time and help answering them. Thank you very much for your help. Gary

A. Leeches are shipped on a daily or weekly bases. They arrive 3 days later at your home and you have nothing to worry about. We provide a 100% live arrival guarantee that your leeches will be living when they come to your address. We also ship leeches worldwide.

Q. Hi do you deliver to Australia, can these leeches be used for detoxing reasons, like removing toxins from blood?

A. We can ship leeches to Australia and people use them for different purposes, although we are not particularly familiar with the purposes each person buys their leeches for, they have been used since ancient time for detox, purification and healing purposes. As with anything, if you should choose to use your leeches medicinally, we recommend you contact a hirudotherapist or consult a medical doctor.

Q. Hi when you sell different sizes of leech will the smaller ones grow to the size of the large ones? How often should you feed them? Does more regular feeding increase growth rate? Thanks

A. Yes, baby Hirudo leeches will grow to become small, then they will grow to a medium size, then to Large, jumbo, XXXL and Dracula size. Leeches are either fed with the blood of living mammals, or they can be fed with an intestine filled with the blood of a butchered animal. Yes, the more often you feed your leech pets, they more rapidly they will grow and increase in size!

Q. What do you feed your older leeches? Also what is the most colorful one? Hoping to get one soon and want an colorful one that will get big. Thank you

A. Old leeches, new leeches, baby leeches, all leeches we sell are fed with blood. They are bloodsucking creatures and prefer living mammals to feed off of. The most colorful leeches are the Hungarian leech variety. They can get pretty big as well. Enjoy your new pets!

Q. Do the baby leeches ship to Canada?

A. Yes, all leech species ship within Canada regularly.

Q. Can Leeches Be housed with fish so they can feed off of them?

A. Leeches will latch onto your fish and feed off of it, yes. Your poor fish will lose its eyesight first, because since leeches cannot latch onto fish scales, they go for the eyes! They also love to feed off of frogs and live cattle.

Q. What's the likelyhood that a baby leach will survive 3-4 day priority shipping to south florida in the summer?

A. In summer, we only ship leeches to Florida with a Live-Arrival Guarantee, using overnight shipping. In this case 100% of the leeches survive and arrive alive. If you choose any other shipping method, you are running a great risk and with the cheapest shipping method, your leeches will probably have a 0% chance of making it alive, so best to go with Overnight. After September, leeches sent to Florida using the cheapest means, have a much better chance of surviving, since temperatures are below 25 degrees Celsius.

Q. I Keeping seeing the absorbent pads for sale, what are they for?

A. The absorbent pads are for the bleeding that occurs after the leech feeding. Leeches are fed with the blood of living mammals, so naturally, you might want to use pads to absorb the blood flow afterwards, which may take up to 10-12 hours to subside.

Q. I'm going to use the leeches in order to attempt to save my cat. He has saddle thrombus. It looks like I should shave the area on his lower belly. One articles says use 1, but they seem small so I might use 2. (And I saw a pic with a person using 2 on their cat). Does anyone know how often I should have the leeches feed on the cat. I've suspended the use of aspirin and plavix for now, prior to using the leeches. But should I use the medicine again? We don't have holistic vets in my area, so i am on my own. Appreciate any advice.

A. 5 large leeches is what we have heard being fed on pets & animals such as a dog or a cat and this should take care of the problem once and for all. You can use the leeches all at once and only one feeding should be sufficient.

Q. I live in the desert, obviously it gets quite hot. I'm worried about my leeches getting to hot what should I do will they be ok?

A. If your Hirudo leeches are kept in room-temperature water, inside an air-conditioned room - they will live a long life indeed. However if you keep them cool, your leeches will be prompted to release more of their green excrement into their own water. Over time, their excrement being of pH not suitable for them, your leeches will get poisoned by it. This means, you would either have to change your leeches' water more often and increase the volume of water in which you keep them, or you would need to keep them someplace cool, so they excrete less and maintain a healthy lifestyle. We do not recommend you keep leeches in the refrigerator as the icy-cold water will eventually deform them and they are more likely to die prematurely. The best concentration is: 100 leeches to a 10-litter leech bucket (leech lodge or aquarium), kept at room temperature, inside a cool air-conditioned room. This lodge needs to have a water change weekly and your leeches will enjoy excellent heath!

We buy our leeches from biopfarm wholesalers, to distribute to customers. If you are uncertain of the quality of our product, you may order from other leech selling sites and compare the results.

Q. I have wondered, does medium leeches leave a scar or just a mark that goes away after a few days?

A. Medium leeches may or may not leave a scar on the skin. It depends on which the leech is placed on. As an example, scars occur on the stomach area and remain and there are never any scars left on the back of the neck. Discuss any medical application with a trained hirudotherapist, to ensure proper application techniques.

Q. When should they be fed? once a year or sooner? and whats the best place to feed them? I was told the arm but I wanted to get others opinion first. (I been thinking of getting a leech for a pet and have stumbled across this site. so far, it looks trusting ????

A. Leeches can be fed as frequently as once per month, when they are babies (0-3 months). They gradually decrease their feeding frequency need, as their age progresses. When they are aged 6 months to 1-year old they can be fed every 3 months. Once they reach 1 years of age, leeches can drink blood as seldom as once every 6 months. After 1.5-2 yeas old and onward, leeches need only be fed by bloodsucking on a mammal only once per year.

Q. Can any of these leeches eat worms?

A. Hirudo leeches do not eat worms. Leeches of this variety do not "eat" anything. They only suck blood. Hirudo Leeches also make wonderful pets!

Q. Do leeches need blood from their keeper/ guardian and how is it done?? Will they leave a scar on my forearm?

A. Leeches can feed on any living mammal. The feeding technique depends on your preference, but most people prefer to let the leech crawl around and attach on their own. For example, if you are going to feed your leech on your dog or cat, you would shave the area for feeding, as the leech prefers bare skin to attach itself on, and let your leech crawl around that area. Once the leech is securely attached, it starts to suck blood and it will drop off on its own when its done. If your leech isn't attaching easily to the chosen area of feeding, you may use the needles sold in our online shop, to prick the skin and let some blood out, so that the leech will smell it and be tempted to feed exactly on that same spot. You may also feed your leeches artificially, by stuffing an empty intestine with blood, however, this option is not advisable, as leeches do not prefer it. They much prefer a firm, live body to suck their blood from. If leeches are fed on humans, small leeches will not leave a scar, but medium and large leeches may leave scars on your body. There are places on the body where scars do not occur, such as the back of the neck area.

Q. Hello! I was wondering if you have any leeches that don't feed on blood, but instead plant matter. If not, can I feed worms or any other alternatives to them besides myself?

A.

Hirudo Leeches do not eat plant matter, nor other animal species. The only eating action they have is to suck. They suck the blood of mammals, such as Cows, Fish, Frogs, Horses, Cats, Dogs, etc.

Q. Hello, I am curious about purchasing one of your buffalo leeches. I am first wanting to confirm you have some available and I am also curious to see if these can be shipped to a PO box? I see you state they may be held at the nearest Walgreens which concerns me since the nearest Walgreens to me is about 25mins away. Please contact me back soon and thank you for all you do.

A. Buffalo leeches ship out from Europe and yes, they are usually in stock year-round. Yes, we should be able to ship it to your PO box address as well, but your address is best in this case. We will not be asking Walgreens to hold your purchase in this case, since Buffalo Leeches are not coming from the US.

Q. What is the price of your 2-day delivery and your overnight delivery? So that I understand, 2-day delivery is delivery not on the day after order placement but the day after the day order placement? As well, overnight delivery is shipped at night to arrive in the mailbox the day after the placement of the order, as in the next day, right? PS. Yep, a leech that dissolves fibrin formations is amazing! So if a person has a fibroblast, a tough bead of fiber that encapsulates bad bacteria or other pathogen, that fibroblast and what's inside it are goners after the Amazon leech does his work near it! Leeches are blessings! They're good guys and gals! PSS. What is the size of leech you recommend for oral care, say, to attach to gums to heal teeth and, especially, jaw problems such as jaw necrosis and a severed blood vessel such as the alveolar artery in the mandible? I would need the leech that can cause blood vessels to grow and connect to each other, producing good flow of blood in the jaw and gums. Would just-born leeches be too small? What size or sizes of leech do you find beneficial for gum, tooth and especially jaw care? Thanks, guys! Gary

A. We now offer Fedex overnight as well. We did not know amazon leeches can even dissolve protein formations too, this is something very interesting!

A. If you purchase leeches from Europe, they will be shipped from Eastern Europe for you. We do not currently carry any Macrobdella Decora leeches at the present time, only the Hirudo varieties.

Q. FedEx is a possibility. Is it more expensive, however, than using the carrier you use usually? If yes, how much more expensive? Oh, leeches can be held at Walgreens? Maybe that's the route to travel. Thanks again and talk with you later! -Gary

A. Fedex is an express courier so shipping cost for leeches is double or triple that of Post Office. The benefit to using an express courier is that you receive the live-arrival guarantee when you select the Overnight leech shipping option in summertime!

Q. Why are you doing this? I genuinely want to know why the fuck anybody would want to drop $600 on a leech.

A.

Q. Can I put ice in my leech tank to keep them cool?

A. We do not recommend you put ice into your leech tank. When the ice falls to the bottom of the tank and leeches touch it, they may stick to the ice, as ice is sticky. Once they are stuck to the ice, they will not be able to detach themselves and may eventually die or get deformed. We do not recommend you use ice in close proximity to your leeches.

Q. Hi, are your small leeches Hirudo Verbana?

A. Leeches we carry are mainly the Hirudo variety and yes, you can receive small and baby leeches in Hiuro varieties or as Buffalo Leeches as well. Simply place your order in our online store and leave a note in the NOTES field during checkout.

Q. Can leeches help reduce weight. I'm post menopausal and have gained weight, 50 lbs, in 6 months.

A. Hirudo Medicinalis and Hirudo Verbana Leeches have been used for weight loss by Hirudotherapists historically. However, we cannot advise you on where exactly the body-placement points are on the body for this type of application. You should consult with your medical professional, before applying such therapy on yourself.

Q. Hi, Guys, Just want to get back to you to say, will do. I'm a bit busy so I'm going to hold off buying them at this moment. Something I thought about is the season. It's summer here. I don't know where you are, but I'm in California. So far, the weather's been ok, but the weather does change from day to day. One day the weather is hot, the next it's temperate and can be cool even. July, August and September are hot months usually. I'm considering waiting until October to buy the leeches. The climate should be cool in October. Additionally, because I work and that I'm in summer school, I'm very busy. I'm home seldom, and because I am I want to avoid not being home when the leeches are delivered or coming home late night, as I do from work, in which case the leeches will have been in my mailbox for several hours. Aside from those interferences in receiving my leeches, might you and I set up a date for delivery? I ask this question in the prospect of buying the leeches before October, perhaps buying them this month -- or when summer school ends, in early August when my schedule will be less busy than it is, affording me more time than I have now to be home. Thank you, guys! Have a great day! If you're in the Untied States, have a happy Independence Day! Gary

A. If you choose the express Fedex delivery, the leeches arrive in 2 days usually in great condition or they can be held at Walgreens to make sure the temperatures will not affect them.

Q. Hi, I was wondering when I should feed my new medium sized leech? I just ordered one from you.

A. You can feed your leeches as soon as you receive them or as late as 1 year from the day you order your leech from Leeches.com, as leeches can last up to a year in a hungry state.

Q. I am considering medicinal leech therapy for my Labrador Retriever's ear. She's developed a hematoma on her ear flap and I want to avoid surgery. However, I am new to this idea of therapy. What would you suggest?

A. Bloodsucking leeches have been used for hematoma historically since the beginning of the century. It takes only about 5 large leeches placed on your dog's skin, to cause the shrinking of the hematoma bump (bubble) and for the affected area to dry up and go away completely in a couple of weeks. As always, feel free to contact your hirudotherapist when using bloodsucking leeches medically on yourself or your pet, or consult with a medical doctor about each condition, before using leeches, to make sure there are no contraindications and you are using the leeches correctly, at your own risk.

Q. I recently purchased the "buy 9 leeches" package for $69 and wanted to inquire about the species that were included as I intend to use them in hirudotherapy. Please give me whatever information you can about the medical veracity of my purchase. Thank you.

A. The leeches you can purchase in our online store are of the Hirudo variety. If you should decide to use them medically, as many people choose to do, you should consult your medical doctor or a trained hirudotherapy professional (leech therapist). Before attempting to use your bloodsucking leeches for medicinal purposes, keep in mind you are doing so at your own risk, unless done under medical prescription and supervision.

Q. Hello first I wanted to say I have ordered 3 leeches before from you and i couldn't be happier with them. I wondering if it is possible to change my new order to two baby Hungarian leeches instead. I will happily pay for the additional charge of the Hungarian.

A. We are happy to hear that your order arrived in good condition and you are happy with your new aquatic pets! Yes, we will go ahead and change your new order to Hungarian leeches, we hope you will enjoy them just as much and have fun playing with them and observing their behavior :)

Q. Can you send the leeches to Norway? I will be on a vacation next week, so I will order after the vacation. I have some questions. 1. What is the difference between mini leech and small leech on your website? size or species 2. about the leeches for sale: 22 live pack ($ 119.99). Do I have an option to choose the size of this leech pack or just mixed size? Because I plan to leech on my face, I want to get pretty small leeches.

A. Yes, we can send leeches to Norway. To answer your questions; 1. Mini leeches are smaller bloodsucking leeches than small leeches, as they are also sometimes called "cosmetic leeches". 2. Regarding the 22-leech pack, yes, you can certainly request a particular size or a mixture of different sizes, if you write to us in advance by email to: info@leeches.org

Q. About Amazon leeches, yes, they exist. They're in and from the Amazon rainforest. :o) I might've been incorrect, however, saying one the effects of the Amazon leech is that what it injects dissolves fat. I'd have to check what I read a while ago, but it might be that what this leech injects dissolves plaque (that is, cholesterol deposits). About your prices on leeches.com and Amazon.com, are prices less expensive on your website less than they are on Amazon.com's or are prices the same on both websites? If I buy your leeches on leeches.com instead of on Amazon.com, who should I make the check or money order out to? One other thing: The Amazon leech has a chemical that breaks up fibrin clusters, not cholesterol clusters known as plaque and clots, which I think most if not all medicinal leeches dissolve, anyway. If most but not all medicinal leeches dissolve clots, perhaps the Amazon leech is one of the leeches that can dissolve clots. Anyway, thanks, guys, and goodnight. -Gary

A. Medicinal Hirudo Leeches, as well as all other leeches of the bloodsucking variety have the ability to produce and inject powerful compounds, no matter what variety the leech is. All bloodsucking leeches can and are been used in Hirudotherapy, worldwide. Some produce more hours of bleeding and others less. Feel free to use your leeches as you see fit. And if you have any more questions, you might want to consult with a leech therapist let us know.

Q. Does leeches.com accept checks or money orders? I bought leeches from your company when you were on Amazon. Do you anticipate returning to Amazon? I ask this question because I use Amazon gift cards to make my purchases. I believe using them isn't risky compared to using a credit card. Buying from there would continue to permit gift card transaction, which for me works easy. Do you sell Amazon leeches? I read that Amazon leeches inject a de-coagulate in addition to an anti-coagulant. To my knowledge, an anti-coagulant prevents blood cells from sticking to each other and a de-coagulant unsticks, or takes apart, blood cells. I also read that the Amazon leech injects a chemical that dissolves fat cells. I'm not sure, but I think this quality is unique to the Amazon leech. If you don't sell the Amazon leech, do you sell a leech that possesses these two qualities? When I bought leeches, I'd informed you seven of my 21 leeches died in transit. I understand your policy is that if leeches have passed away in transit, you re-mail that number of them -- based on the customer sending you a photograph of the leeches who died. I have an old phone. Its plan is basic: It consists of talk and text. I have a camera and at the time it was packed away in one of my boxes because I had moved. Because I couldn't get to my camera and charge its battery that takes a days to charge, my phone's plan is without photo send and receive functions and that I explained these two things to you, you said should would trust me and send those seven leeches in my next order. May her offer still stand? Thank you, Gary

A. Yes we are back on Amazon. Here is the link to our amazon leech shop.

Amazon leeches are just as powerful as the Hirudo European Leeches, which is what we sell.

Leeches.com

Q. Hello, Can you please tell me the type of leech these are and what sizes and would I be able to possibly pick some sizes?

A.

Q. I noticed you sell a book about leeches on leeches.com. The picture of the book is entitled Hirudo: Hirudo Leech Book ($19.99). A while ago, leeches.com sold the book "Medicinal Leech". I own this book. Is your book, "Hirudo," this book? I ask that question because the picture given for the book is generic, displaying only the word hirudo. If I recall correctly, the "Medicinal Leech Therapy" was for $19.99. I'd just like to know whether the books are the same or is your book its self, its own, different than Medicinal Leech Therapy? I've been studying leeches for two and a half years. I find them to be healers of many problems. They are astonishing. They fascinate me. They've helped me and they saved my cat's life. Because I find them most interesting and that I'm studying massage and one day will attend acupuncture school, some day I'll start a practice and use leeches in it. For now, I want to learn as much as I can about leeches; I want to read every book on leeches I can get my hands on. Leeches are a blessing for mankind and all mammals. have one more question. I thought I'd ask you it despite knowing its answer is a shot in the dark. There was a book I saw on Amazon many months ago and I thought it would be there once I had the money for it. The book isn't old, after all. It was published in 2013. The other day I went to buy it and it was "unavailable" and a message next to it stated Amazon doesn't know whether it'll be back in stock. I've looked on the Internet and I cannot find it available anywhere, not even on eBay. It's as though this book and information about it has been deleted from the Internet except for the trace information remaining on Amazon. The book is "Leech Therapy in Ayurveda" (ISBN 9381301158) by Dr. M. Bhaskar Rao and Dr. Hemant Kumar Kushwaha. I'm quite bummed about it being gone. On the off chance, would you , someone knowledgeable about leeches, be aware of this book and know where it can be purchased? Thank you for this book you've written or made available, or both. And thank you for your time and help concerning my questions. Thank you, Gary

A. Yes you own the same leech book as the one we sell, so no need to buy it again. Here is the link to the book called Leech Therapy in Ayurveda by Dr. M. Bhaskar Rao and Dr. Hemant Kumar Kushwana

Q. I'm a little confused as to the species of leeches you have - do you have baby jumbo leeches (are jumbo leeches sold as "jumbo" size, but are a specific species?). Or the giant Dracula leech - do you have these as babies?

A. Hirudo is the bloodsucking leech type for sale in our online store. Yes, we have all leeches in baby size, including the jumbos and the Draculas. If you need any of the leeches in a particular age or size, simply emal us at: info@leeches.org and we will arrange your leech order to be exactly to your specifications.

Q. Is it possible to use another type of moss/bedding for the leeches?I have a bunch of extra java moss from my shrimp-tank, and am considering just taking all that extra moss and give it to he leeches. Not sure if it will work, but I figured both the leeches and the java moss are primarily freshwater based...

A. Moss is used by the leech as a shade and as its protective bedding to crawl under and hide into. The leech loves mossy lakes, hence why it prefers swamps and marshlands as its natural habitat. It has been said by many leech experts that any moss will work, when it comes to keeping, breeding and raising leeches, however, the mosses we offer in our online store are the preferred type by the leech variety we offer. Nevertheless, you should be able to use your moss as well, as long as its alive.

Q. Can you send to sa (South Africa)? Can leeches be kept and reused?

A. Yes, we send leeches internationally. They indeed can get hungry again in 3-6 months time, so meanwhile you can keep them as pets and have fun raising your leeches!

Leeches.com

Q. Is a 5 gallon to much for one large leech alone?

A. 5 Gallon is going to be a very good size vessel for a leech to freely swim in and live comfortably. Maybe its a bit too much freedom for her, but she will definitely appreciate it.

Leeches.com

Q. Can i get Hirudo leeches in the United States?

A. Yes, you certainly can.

Regards,
Leeches.com

Q. How long can I expect the large leeches to live? How often should they be fed? Can they digest blood properly if kept in the refrigerator all the time?

A. Leeches of most Hirudo types live up to 6 years, according to most scientific reports. The bloodsucking leech can be fed once every 3 months when in baby stage and once every 6 months when in the teenage stage. Once they grow up, leeches can be fed once a year or when they get hungry for blood. We do not advise you to keep leeches in the refrigerator, as this poses a threat to their health and interferes with proper digestion.

Q. Will it be shipped to me within 3 days?

A. Leech orders are shipping within the same week and they usually arrive 3 days after dispatch.

Q. I want to try on putting a leech to see how the feeling . Wonder if this works for me in my pain and swollen feet and my arthritis . But I bought some on leech.com and I tried one. I wanted to know what happened and why. After my leech feed of me, hours later it throw up all my blood and died the next day. Plz I wanted to know why

A. The feeling when getting bitten by a leech can be compared to a tiny electric shock or some describe it as feeling similar to a mosquito bite. Some bites are more prominent than others and can be felt more than others. It depends on the delicateness of the area on the body on which the bloodsucker is placed to bite. We do not know why your leech has died after feeding on you. In many cases, leeches die from improper care. As we are not familiar with her particular circumstance, we cannot be sure as to what happened to your pet exactly. You can purchase more leeches and give it another try at caring for them, to see if they will survive better this time. In some cases the blood of its owner can also kill the leech, as they are prone to dying when they are exposed to toxicity. If you decide to use your leeches medicinally, be sure to consult with your doctor or medical professional, who knows about leeches.

Q. I am a bit interested with your wild leeches?? Can i ask if these leeches are land dwellers as pictured from the image that you guys posted or, are they the same 'ole wild version of Medical Leech (Hirudo Medicinalis)?? I did bought 8 of your H. Verbana from you guys not too long ago and all survived transit just so you know. My only honest complain about you guys is the lack of description for each or group of specimens that you're selling.. That's why i asked..

A. Wild leeches are also Hirudo and are not recommended for medicinal use. Consult with your doctor or healthcare professional when using any leech species medically on the human body, even if its just for feeding. The only specimens we sell at the moment are Hirudo varieties.

Leeches.com

Q. How much blood does the Dracula leech require to sustain itself? Does losing that much blood pose a health risk to the pet owner?

A. Dracula leeches are fed every 3 months when they are babies. At a teen-age stage they can get fed every 6 months and later on in life, these Hirudo leeches can be fed when they get hungry.

The following text does not constitute medical advise, but is strictly the leech sellers' opinion: Losing a minute amount of blood, such as in the event of being bitten by a leech (5-10 grams) cannot be described as posing a health risk, just like experiencing minor bloodletting when you get a cut or get bitten by mosquito. Neither of these situations pose a serious health risk, unless the animal is infected with a disease or a virus. Leeches are insects and they do not inflict that significant of influence onto the human body, unless used excessively and out of reasonable proportion. As always, you should consult with your doctor or a healthcare professional, when using the leech or any other animal medicinally on the human body.

Q. Hello! I am keeping leeches as pets, and allowing them to feed from yourself, are there any health concerns the for the owner as far as losing too much blood? Especially concerning the buffalos

A. We have not sold you your buffalo leech pet. You would definitely need to ask the supplier who sold you the buffalo leeches to find out if their leech stock is sterile and clean and suitable to feed on humans.

Q. Hi. Do you have medical leeches?. If so can you email me information and price for it. I think it are the same as a cosmetic leeches. Best regards. Adam Wieczorek. tel 973-477-2451,

A. We are a budget leech seller online. If you are looking for medicinal or medical leeches shop, you might need to contact specialty leech sellers online or clinics that sell them in your area. Although many people may choose to use our bloodsucking Hirudo leeches for medical purposes, we do not advocate their use in medicine without consulting a medical practitioner or hirudotherapy professional first.

Q. Hello..I'm needing a LOT of information and actually can't seem to find what I need on the site. Is there a phone number I can call or are you located outside the USA? I am teaching two one week classes to gifted high schoolers on Medieval Medicine and would like to include a day with leeches but I have no idea of where to start. Price is a factor and I only need perhaps three leeches. There was an advert for leeches for $6.00 earlier this week (regularly $8.00) but I don't know if that is per leech or in a packet. I also don't know what type of leech it is. I'm also needing to ask a few questions about the leeches themselves since I am a medievalist and not a science teacher! Such as can they escape through a large air hole?

A. We offer email-based support in the US as well as Worldwide. $6 sounds like a price per leech, as we do not have packages priced that low per package of Leeches.

Leeches do tend to escape through larger holes only. So, if your holes are needle-sized, they will not be able to escape.

Q. What kind of leech is it sorry I probably should know just wondering.

A. Our leeches are the Hirudo variety. Enjoy your pregnant leech!

Q. Hello. Just curious of on how long (lifespan) do Hirudo leeches live for in captivity? (as a pet). Also, are there different lifespan for the various sizes of the leeches sold on this site? Or are the varying sizes here really just an indicator on where the leech might be in their life cycle? (Example: smaller leeches are typically younger than the larger counterparts? I'd really like to know these things, as they may assist me on choosing what kind of leeches I will get (as a pet).

A. Baby leeches are newborns. Small leeches are young teenagers. Medium leeches are regular adults. Large leeches are somewhat over the hill. X-Large and XXX-Large leeches are senior citizens and Dracula leeches should probably be thinking about the nursing home (LOL). So yes, size does matter, in regards to age. A leech normally lives to about 3 years. We hope this information helps you choose the right aquatic pet for yourself.

Q. I recently purchased a large leech, it is a little lethargic but seems healthy, Problem is it does not want to latch on to feed, Should I be concerned for its well being?

A. Leeches don't always want to eat when you want them to. Sometimes it maybe tired from the travel and sometimes its in mating season and wants to mate, rather than drink blood. You can however trick a leech to bite when you pierce the skin of the host and let out some blood. As soon as the leech smells the blood, it will be enticed to bite and it will / should latch onto that very place where the blood is pouring out of. You can also use an aerosol spray cap and place your leech under that cap, and cup it over the location where you would like the leech to bite. The leech will get upset from the smell of the aerosol spray or deodorant smell inside the cap and it will often bite right there, out of pure anger. We hope this helps! Let us know if you should have any other questions.

Q. How large is the jar? (Amount of gallons or liters it can hold).

A. Our leech jars are either 1-litter (Quart Size) or 2-litters (half gallon) in volume

Q. Hi! How long do I have to wait for the baby leeches to grow up to use for medicinal purposes?

A. Leeches grow up in 3 to 6 months. To use them for medical purposes, it is advisable that you first seek out a hirudotherapist or a medical professional. Some people are able to use leeches medicinally from the baby stage, but once again, once you consult with a professional, they will tell you what species they use and at what stage of their life they apply them.

Regards,
Leeches.com

Q. What are the diseases transmitted by leeches? How do you screen for these?

A. There are no known diseases transmitted by Hirudo Leeches, as this type of leech does not have back-valves to release blood back into its host body. Nevertheless, it is best to consult with a medical professional for medical advise on this and other health-related topics.

Q. Could the medicine I take harm leeches whenI feed them?

A. The simple answer is: probably not! Leeches are very resilient creatures and they adapt to different types of chemicals in the water and in their food supply as well. We have not heard of any case of leeches being killed by medicines. However, leeches will die from soap solution as well as from salt, so avoid any soap or salt contamination in your leeches' water and they should survive and thrive well.

Regards,
Leeches.com

Q. Are all leaches Sterile or can they be bred?

A. Leech babies are sterile. This means they have never been fed before. All other leeches have been fed at some point in their life, before they reach the end-consumer. Yes, you can try and breed your pet leeches by placing a couple of them in a container together and watch them mate. Then, setup their leech bedding of moss or straw and as you notice your mommy getting pregnant, so she can deliver her leech cocoons in fresh moist straw or moss. Once cocoons are delivered, new babies will hatch from them in a month's time under the right living conditions.

Q. Hi again. Thank you for your help and answers. I asked why you all said it wasn't good to let Dracula leeches feed from you and you about a week ago and you replied "Where did you read that Dracula leeches cannot feed on you?" I must of been confused from what I read, excuse me but I saw you all posted on description of this type of leech that it's "Not suitable for leech therapy" so thus I that's why I asked why. I much appreciate your time and help as I think I can attest for the rest of us who are fascinated and truly want to learn about these creatures so we do know what's good or bad. Finally I have to ask, the XXXL leeches are European or American? Which ones are the biggest European ones I guess I am asking? Again, thank you very much for your insight. M.G.

A. Leech therapy (Hirudotherapy) is quite different than letting a leech feed on you. In one case, you are using the leech medicinally, and in the other case you are not. We do not advise you to use it with medicinal purposes unless you consult with a medical professional or a hirudotherapist with regards to your medical condition and take the appropriate action regarding this matter. Feeding your leech is another matter unto itself and is not equated to applying leeches therapeutically. I hope this makes things more clear for you.

Q. Hello. I had fed my leeches approximately two months ago. Two leeches are doing well with nothing concerning. However, one leech has been found in bright red bloody water over the past few days. Is this normal? Is it from bowel movements? I am concerned for my pets wellbeing.

A. Leeches will vomit blood on occasion. There is nothing really concerning about this, except that you need to change its water immediately and think about improving its living conditions, i.e. determine if its not too hot or too cold and if its getting too much sunlight or too little sunlight, etc.

Q. Hello, why do you say best not to let Dracula leeches feed from you? Which type of leach is more aggressive when feeding ... the European or American? Do the XXL Jumbos feed as much as the Dracula ones? Besides the buffalo one I take it the Dracula one is the biggest please?

A. Where did you read that Dracula leeches cannot feed on you? European leeches are more aggressive feeders than the American variety. XXL jumbo leeches feed nearly as much as the huge Draculas. Yes, besides the Buffalo leeches, which can get to the length of your arm, Dracula ones are the second best choice.

Q. Hello, the leeches that I purchased are not wanting to attach to me. They are all alive, I don't understand what the problem would be. I have had leeches before and they attached without a problem.

A. Sometimes leeches might get tired from the shipping and time spent in the hot container during travel. Simply place them in cold water and allow your leeches a few day's time to rest and recover from the trip. Once they are ready, they will start to bite. Also, leeches will refuse to bite if you or somebody in your household uses strong perfumes, or scented soaps. Everything must be odor-less and natural, for the leeches to want to bite. They also very much like the smell of sweat and natural perspiration. Some people also prick the area where the leech will be attaching, as the smell of blood will entice the insect to want to feed.

Q. I am a chiropractor in Texas interested in using leeches for hirudotherapy on myself. Could you please advise me which if any of the leeches you sale are appropriate for this function?

A. It is up to you to decide whether to use our leeches for this type of purpose or not, as you are doing so at your own risk. We are not devoted to selling leeches for medical use, although many people prefer to think of Hirudo leeches that way. However, if you have decided to undertake this process, then we have learned from other hirudotherapists that the best would probably be the large size leech for tough areas and cosmetic size for delicate areas.

Q. Hey Leeches.com, I was wondering if you sold any North American species, or "scavenger" leeches. Since I don't really want to "feed" myself to a leech. Thanks, Evan

A. We do not sell any North American Species of leeches at the present moment. However, keep checking our web shop, as we occasionally get these species in and release them for sale at the online store. All our leeches at the present moment are bloodsuckers.

Q. How many bloodsucking leeches for bait do you get with one order?rn

A. Each leech product has a count associated with it - i.e, you choose how many you need from there. Bloodsucking leeches are either sold in packages or individually. If they are displayed as a pack, the count is indicated in the title and description. If they are sold individually, there is no count and you must choose how many you want on the screen, just above the "Add to Cart" button.

Q. Greetings and salutations, I have a few questions before I place an order. 1) How many different species and morphs of leech do you sell? 2) Is there a difference in morphology or species between the XXXL Jumbo leech, the "Kiss of the Vampire" Transylvania pet leech, and the "Giant Dracula Pet Leech"? 3) Is there a difference in morphology or species between the Hungarian leech and the other Small, medium, or large leeches. 4) What is the primary food source being provided for the Larger size and Jumbo size leeches? I look forward to doing business with you in the very near future. Thank you, Darryl

A. There are generally 3 varieties of bloodsucking leeches that exist in Europe: Hirudo Medicinalis, Hirudo Verbana & Hirudo Officialis. Since we do not sell them for medical purposes per se, the varity that we quote is "Hirudo", so you will get one of the bloodsucking Hirudo varieties or a hybrid version of those three. The "Dracula" and "Vampire" naming conventions are used for novelty purposes only and do not represent a different morphology. We hope this answers your questions.

Regards,
Leeches.com

Q. i know leeches can eat frogs but how about small tadpoles

A. Bloodsuckers of the Hirudo variety do not eat anything, much less frogs. The only thing they feed on is mammal blood and they obtain it by way of sucking. It is possible for them to suck blood from frogs as well.

Q. i ordered large leeches and was wondering if they were free of parisites

A. Your pet leeches have not been individually tested in-house for parasites, before they ship out. We are not familiar with leech testing for "parasites", but you can certainly try it, by sending your samples from the leeches you received to a lab near you and have your test results analyzed by a medical professional for pathogens, as you like. We are a budget leech seller, not a medical facility, laboratory or any other type of medical establishment, so do not unfortunately offer individual leech testing services.

Leeches.com

Q. The leeches are fed beef blood at the farm so is there a way i can feed my leeches beef blood

A. There are ways you could feed your pet leeches with beef blood - yes. Some people buy emptied intestines from the butcher shop and fill them with beef blood. You can then place this intestine in a tray and place the leeches around it, to feed on. We can't guarantee the leeches would like this blood meal very much, but it is an alternative feeding method for bloodsucking leeches, who otherwise MUCH prefer to latch onto a living organism (host body) to feed from.

Leeches.com

Q. The leeches iv ordered are "babies" so I was curious if they have ever been fed? And what y'all use to feed at the facilities

A. We do not feed our leeches for sale. We receive them hungry as well as sell them the same way. Leeches can last up to 1 full year without feeding. All bloodsucking leeches are being fed certified beef blood at the bio-pharms but we are not a pharm, and we do not get involved with feeding the live animals, we only care for them, until its time to ship them, when they are sold to customers like you.

Q. Are there air hole in the lid?

A. You can order the leech jars either with or without air holes on the lid or on the sides, depending on the your personal preference. If you prefer to have air holes, simply include a note at the time of checkout.

Regards,
Leeches.com

Q. What day of the week do you ship the leeches?

A. There isn't a set week day for shipping leeches. Each order is shipped out as soon as possible, usually on the following work day, however we cannot guarantee you a particular shipment or arrival day. You will need to find an emergency leech shipper for this and they charge $16 per leech. We are a budget leech supplier and we do not offer overnight shipping. We can ship leeches via Fedex (2-day) but there are no arrival day guarantees nor shipment day guarantees still. We can have your order held at the nearest Walgreens for you to pickup, this option offers a faster turnaround time on the delivery, since the leeches don't spend an extra day on the delivery truck to get to your address. Nevertheless, if you are under any deadlines or pressed by any dates, we are not the right leech supplier for you. Leeches.com offers budget options for leech packages and we work on a our own delivery schedule suitable for shipping the leeches, so that they reach you alive and well. If you have any special requirements of any kind, please contact another supplier.

Q. I can't seem to find y'all's shipping schedule so I was just curious when min would be going out I placed the order for four leech hatchlings today (Thursday) probably around 2:00 PM and was wondering if it would be going out this week or at the start of next week TIA

A. Leeches are shipped weekly, so depending on availability, your leech order will depart at the earliest convenient time within the same week, and will arrive at your address 2-3 days later, depending on the shipping option you have selected at the time of checkout.

Q. Hello. How long can the leeches survive in the bottle once I receive them?

A. Once your leeches are received, you need to take them out of the transport container with hirudo gel and transfer them into a jar of clean cold water. You should not leave them in the original containers more than a few hours after receipt, as that medium is going to be dirty and needs replacement.

Q. Hello, you say that the Giant Dracula Pet Leech is Not Suitable for Leech Therapy. Will they harm humans if you let them feed on you? Also same question for the buffalo leech. Can you explain this a little better please?

A. No, leeches do not harm humans in the process of biting or feeding. Furthermore, leeches are not known to transmit diseases because they don't have any back-valves inside their bodies. Also, there have never been any document deaths from leech bites. Leeches are considered quite safe and harmless animals.

Q. I was looking to buy a leech or two from you guys and I'm curious how y'all need them at your facility? And if they were sterile?

A. Hello Kody, we do not know what you mean by "need"? And yes our leeches are completely sterile, as they come from certified biopharms in Europe.

Q. I use leech forceps to pick up my leeches but there suckers are very strong is there an easy way to get them out with the forceps?

A. Yes, if the leech is large, its sucker is quite strong. The best way to deal with it is to use a pair of cotton gloves like the ones we sell here and swipe across the surface to which the leech is clinging, This will dislodge the sucker and let the leech loose.

Q. Can I use this cream for face ? Want to order please respond

A. Its a cream with leech extract. You could probably use it for any part of the skin on the body, not just the legs.

Q. Would I be able to feed these creatures my own blood as a primary source?

A. Many people feed their pet leeches with their own blood. We would advise you that using leeches on yourself is done at your own risk. Although very few people are allergic to leech bites, it is possible that you may be one of them, in which case it is possible to experience prolonged redness or skin irritation, in which case you should seek medical help.

Q. Is there any information on using the leeches to eliminate tumours ?

A. Leeches have a long history of being used in medicine, including the conditions you are afore-mentioning, however, it is best to consult with a doctor or a professional hirudotherapist, before using leeches medically.

Q. Can leeches live in a sealed Mason jar? How about breathing?

A. Yes, leeches can live comfortably in a large mason jar. Be sure to keep a tight lid on, or cover it with a piece of cloth, tied with an elastic band. For more leech care tips, check out the leech care page of our website HERE.

Regards,
Leeches.com

Q. can you use these for health issues, like putting them on your skin?

A. Leeches of the bloodsucking variety have a long history of being used to treat illnesses, diseases and medical conditions. Leeches are still widely used in Eastern Europe, by people and folk healers as a cure for many ailments. Therefore, bloodsucker leeches are medically significant animals in that respect, however, you are proceeding at your own risk, if you decide to use leeches to apply on your skin. We advise you to consult with an experienced hirudotherapist, before treating yourself medically and we also advise you to procure medical leeches, which are especially bred in approved bio-farms and fed on sterile beef blood, to be able to be used in the medical establishments. You can also watch videos on youtube about leech therapy, to learn more about this interesting topic.

Q. Hi. Just received a baby today. Your site says that before I change the water, I am to shake it up vigorously. Won't this hurt the leech? Also, the leech will really be okay in a tightly sealed Mason jar? It doesn't need air? Just don't want to kill the little guy. Thank you

A. You do not have to shake your leech jar, simply transfer your baby leech into cold water.

Shaking helps shade the leech skin and will not hurt the leech at all.

Leeches.com

Q. I received three baby leeches, for feeding baby leeches so they get growing do I have to prick an area for them to feed off of? I know babies teeth aren't as strong as larger ones, tried feeding mine and they didn't latch.

A. Yes, baby leeches might not be able to latch onto the skin of its feeding host, but this is not a problem. Simply place an adult leech to fee before them and place the babies on the same site afterward. This way they would be able to feed properly. Also, another alternative is to allow them to grow a little, before attempting to feed the baby leeches, by that time they would have become a proper small leech size and will be bite on their own.

Q. Dear Leeches.com I am so happy to order again for my family your Wonderful leeches. I would like to ask you before I place an order if it will be possible to separate the leeches from my new order to the three bottle/containers :29 Jumbo+ 25 Jumbo + 4 Cosmetic (mini one)? Thank you in advance. I will place an order now and hope that my message will reach you before my order will be shipped out. Thank you in advance again.

A. Hello Jen,

We separate the leeches in such a way so they would survive the journey. Unfortunately we cannot stuff so many leeches into a single container for the road, as suggested by yourself, but you can certainly separate them into whatever groups you like, after you have received them!

Q. where do babies come from

A. Did you send us a picture on the day of delivery to info@leeches.com, so we could look at it and determine what might be going on with your leech?

Q. Hi, I was wondering if it is possible to breed a pair of leech from you?

A. Of course you can breed our leeches. Simply purchase a pair of leeches and use the leech moss for the pregnant leeches perhaps you want to get the leech bed as well. Or you can buy a pregnant leech and see if you can create favorable conditions for her to deliver the leech cocoons in your bedding.

Q. Thank you. I received your message. When mentioned prior that chlorinates might have been too high from tap water, that made me think de-chlorinated was needed to keep them alive. Maybe I misunderstood. In any case, if plain tap water is fine, then I will use that. I will try again to buy a leech. I feel so bad for having my two prior leeches die on me but I also feel kind of foolish for doing something possibly not right. I know we all need practice to keep.

A. Leeches do not need any special type of care, such as specialized or de-chlorinated waters of any type. Regular tap water is enough to keep them alive and well, as they will adapt to any level of chlorination. Don't feel bad about your loss of leeches, everyone has lost the lives of some exotic aquatic pet at some point in their life, before they learn how to take care of it properly. Next time you will know better and you will be well-suited not only to keep and raise leeches, but maybe even become a leech breeder!

Q. After being bitten by my jumbo leech about how much blood will I bleed out afterward? I want it to bleed so I let it. I have a high red blood cell count so I let it bleed till it stops on it's own. Just want to know about how much will bleed out.

A. The leech-bite host will bleed upwards of 10-12 hours afterward, after which the bleeding will stop on its own. This process is called "oozing" and it is not associated with much blood loss, only with a continuous oozing of lymphatic fluid colored in red from the blood around it.

Q. Hi Leeches.com I purchased a leech from you a few weeks ago and was very happy with the service. My leech is very big and healthy and has already eaten. I have made a leech care video and I mention your website several times. Please feel free to share it or use it on your website. Leech Care: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2qso57ph-oE I also made a Leech Fact Video where I show your leech, here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CevjWAS6hUk&t=31s And I have another leech unboxing video here where I open the leech you sent me: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X12meS7iFag&t=1530s Please feel free to use these videos! Best, Emma

A. We have watched all your leech reviews and videos Emma, wow, what a fantastic work you have done! We are happy your leeches are nice and well and we have sent you a few free specimens as a "thank you" gift with your second leech order. If you should make further videos with our leeches, we will gladly provide you with your own discount code to offer to your viewers and this will give you the opportunity to earn commission as well. If you are interested, let us know.

Q. I had recently received a leech which didn't even make it a full 2 days, sadly. I made sure to use de-chlorinated water, cold and I cut up some tights to use as the "lid" so breathing would be easier. I am not sure why this happened? This site doesn't mention anything about leeches needing to breathe. In fact, it says, "Do not put any holes in the container or lid." For some people who are new to keeping, that could be misleading! I'm kind of upset because this is the second leech I purchased that when changes were made, still didn't make it.

A. Hello Katherine,

It takes a lifetime to learn how to take care of leeches properly, so as not to lose any in the process. Since you are still learning how to take care of leeches, we will gladly double your order for free, if you purchase a new batch of leeches with us. We do not advise using de-chlorinated water, so we are not sure where this information came from. Tap water is all you need. Your leech jar needs to be half-way full of water only, so the leeches will have room to breathe.

Leeches.com

Q. So I only now need to know the following: a. Do you have Verbana AND Hirudo Medicinalis or only Verbana? b. What size do you suggest in my case (I commented details about my case). The "medium" ones ? I could send you pictures of my legs and feet just in case..At least I know that I will undergone about 5 sessions (5 days).. I GUESS I will purchase about 100 leeches at all approximate, ("medium") but I would appreciate some suggestion.. or I will watch some videos, so I could be more sure about the quantity and type.. For example, the "Hungarians" what are for? Which are the best for varicose veins?

A. We carry Hirudo species leeches. We cannot unfortunately make any medical recommendations or suggestions, as we only sell the leeches and we do not dispense any medical instruments or advise. You will need to consult with a medical doctor or hirudotherapy professional about your case. Leeches have a long history of having been used in medicine, however, this is not the subject of this site, as we are just a leech seller service online.

Leeches.com

Q. Hello! I've got my order today: 200 Large Leeches. Thank you. They all are alive and active but I have some questions about them. I ordered leeches before, and on your site too... but why are they so big? Before I ordered large leeches from North Carolina and they were much smaller than yours. Where are your leeches from? Which country were they raised in? My best regards, Iryna

A. Leeches originate from the leech pharms of Europe and they are large because they have been fed on certified beef.

Regards,
Leeches.com

Q. Do you have baby Dracula or kiss of the vampire leeches?rn

A. Yes, we do carry the baby version of them as well. Simply place your order and leave a note in the NOTES field at checkout that you prefer a baby sent to you.

Q. I want to buy live 5 Jumbo leeches for our Colonial Fair. I am an elementary school teacher. I did this last year from a different company but the leeches died despite my best efforts. Is there another food source I can use other than my pet dogs or myself? Last year I tried minnows and raw liver. I see they will attach themselves to frogs, but where do I get some large life frogs?

A. Which company did you order your leeches from? Did the leeches die in your care or did you receive them like that for the shipper? Have you considered feeding them your own blood? As we understand it, most people do just that.

Regards,
Leeches.com

Q. Should part of the leech moss be in the water and part of it OUT of the water on a drier crawl surface?

A. You can check out this product here, which is suitable to keep leeches' bedding half-wet half-dry: https://www.leeches.com/products/leech-bed-for-aquariums

Regards,
Leeches.com

Q. what size are the small leeches in inches?

A. We do not measure leeches in inches or centimeters. The reason is because leeches are stretchy and cannot be measured exactly. The best way to picture their size is to look at the product picture.

Regards,
Leeches.com

Q. Thats two jars for 24.99?

A. We are not sure what your question is...? Does it relate to leeches or the price of leech jars? Our product prices are clearly indicated on the site and if you are interested in a particular product, simply buy it and it will be delivered to do you shortly.

Q. I want to buy my first pet leech, and I read on this site multiple times that every order is protected by some "live arrival guarantee". Though when I go to checkout I'm told that if I don't pay nearly 30 bucks for my single 8 dollar leech, I might get a dead leech. And what if it comes in dead, am I just screwed? I want to use this site but I don't want to be screwed over for choosing a reasonable shipping rate. The site says one thing, then another at checkout and that's pretty confusing.

A. Your purchase is protected by our live arrival guarantee. This means that if your animal arrives dead for some reason and you send us a picture on the day of delivery with the original shipping label, you will get a free replacement. If you were late in notifying us and sending us that picture for some reason, you can still get a replacement, when you place your next order. This means we offer a lifetime leech-replacement guarantee also, when you place a new order! No other services offer these types of guarantees.

Q. After being bitten by my jumbo leech about how much blood will I bleed out afterward? I want it to bleed so I let it. I have a high red blood cell count so I let it bleed till it stops on it's own. Just want to know about how much will bleed out.

A. Any mammal bitten by a leech will continue to bleed for a period of 10 to 12 hours. The quantity of blood is minimal, as the blood is not said to even "bleed" but rather, it "oozes" out in very tiny quantities over a long period of time.

Q. Hello! My English is not the best. My native language is Spanish. Be sure that I will purchase MANY leeches. I will purchase them in June 8 approx. So please do not be "disturbed". In your site it says that you answer any questions very fast, so you can understand that I have the right to be informed about any single detail because your answers will help me to decide the most convenient for my varicose veins case. I will JUST ask the following final questions: 1. Is there some guarantee that you will have enough stock of leeches during all the month of June? 2. You told me that you will gladly send me a new coupon code. Please remember to send it to me in same day before June 7 or 8, so I could use it when I will make the purchase. Thanks. 3. If I pay MORE for the shipping, could you please some way send me the leeches (in June), within 24 hours? (I would like to receive them in June 14). 4. Special pregnant leeches: How much time they could survive without sucking blood from the moment you send it to me? (I will buy many leeches and a pregnant one too). Thanks very much for the answers, Sergio

A. Hello Sergio,

1. We do not have any guarantees on stock levels in the future. The best way to ensure there will be enough leeches in June is to purchase them now and this way the leeches will be reserved for yourself to deliver in June.
2. Again coupon codes come and go, so the only way to capture a certain coupon is to use it now, before it is expired.
3. We do not send leeches overnight, as we are not an emergency leech shipping service. You will need to locate another leech supplier for that.
4. Leeches survive several days in shipping, and we offer a live-arrival guarantee, so you will receive them alive.

Q. So I used cold tap water like your care sheet instructed. My leech was pooing and I wanted to clean the water. Apparently, when I went to check on my leech. It died. I'm not sure what the problem is... Should I not use tap water but rather, Spring water instead? I bought another one. I will try something different this time since I cannot figure out what happened. If you know of anything, please let me know. My intent is not to kill them.

A. Leeches excrements are greenish brown in color. If you see a red excrement, it means your leech has regurgitated blood. This means something in its conditions was not quite right. You might have kept it in the sunlight or not enough air inside the jar... or water had too much chlorox, we cannot know exactly what has happened in the conditions which you have made for her. If you send us a better explanation, we might be able to guess what perhaps might have killed your leech.

Q. Is it normal for a bump to be left under the skin after the bite has healed? I fed my leech about 2 weeks ago and the open wound healed but there is still a bump under my skin.

A. There is a leech scar video that shows that large size leeches will leave scars if you let them feed on your body. In this case, small leeches are much preferred, as they do not leave any scars and bumps whatsoever.

Q. I love this website I will leave a good review! Is there a way to breed leeches without moss? I also told everyone about this website I love it.

A. Hi Bronson, yes, you can breed leeches without moss, instead you can use straw.

Q. Hi, I've been looking for Haementeria ghilianii and was wondering if it was possible to get in captivity and if so how much it d would cost to purchase? I've had a fair amount of people recommend this website to get leeches and just wanted to see if you could possibly get any? Thank you, Robert

A. Hello Robert, we are not sure where you would go to acquire Haementeria ghilianii leeches unfortunately, sorry! Perhaps try searching the countries where these leech species naturally occur.

Q. Hello! I got a Hungarian leech and after I got it, it passed away in about 4 days. I noticed that it was vomiting up the blood it had sucked over the course of 3 days until it finally died. I tried doing water changes every time I saw that it had vomited up new blood but it didn't fix the issue. I decided to try again with a new leech so I ordered a large one since the survival rate is higher. Do you have any recommendations if this happens again?

A. Leeches only suck blood once every 3-6 months. The rest of the time they spend in rest, digesting their ingested blood and sometimes hibernation. Water needs changed only when it gets dirty, i.e. once a week. Any more frequent water changes will rob the leech of its vital elements and nutrients necessary for survival.

Q. This was the first time I have fed my leech and they still remove themselves after a few minutes I also tried a few other mammals like toads and frogs.

A. This sounds great Ben! Leeches tend to drop off when they are completely full.

Q. D'aw, thank you. I had already fed my leech and it was very interesting. What do you recommend to assist in clotting after feedings? I know leeches possess an anti-coagulant within their saliva and didn't know if there was something useful that would quickly seal up the wound. It's amazing at how much it bleeds but eventually does start to clot after awhile. Leeches are oddly cute, they kind of resemble slugs, hehe. Is there a definitive way to tell male from female leeches?

A. Leeches release a special substance that prevents the blood of the host from clotting, therefore, the place on which the leech has fed will continue bleed for upwards of 10 hours. There is no known way to clot or stop the bleeding. Hirudo leeches are neither males nor females, they are in fact hermafrodites. When they mate, they take on the role of the opposing sexes.

Q. I ordered 4 Hungarian leeches a few weeks ago (Becca) and left a review unsure of how to go about getting the free leech so mentioning it here :) Only 1 of the 4 leeches died so I can't complain too much especially with the fast shipment and everything else I'm impressed with. I've also recommended your website to several friends and in two exotic pet groups (one having 37,000+ members and one having 3,000 members). I know that at least two of my friends have purchased from you guys since me posting my Facebook review on my personal page as well. Keep up the awesome service you guys provide!

A. Hello Becca, we have included 4 free leeches with your new order, for you to enjoy as a reward for your wonderful helpful reviews of our leeches and products. Thank you very much indeed!

Q. how do i get them to feed

A. The buffalo leeches feed similar to the Hirudo Verbana leeches, you make a prick to the host's skin and the smell of blood will attract the leech to bite. The hirudinaria Manliensis is a lot harder to trick to bite, than the regular European leeches.

Q. Sorry i keep bothering you with questions but when I feed my leeches a mouse or something similar they latches on for 2 minutes then crawled away do they have a disease? It is 2 of three not all of them.

A. How often do you feed your leeches on your mice? If it was less than 3 months ago, then its too soon! You should wait for your leeches to get blood hungry again, before offering them your mouse to feed from. This takes on average from 3-6 months.

Q. hi i purchased 3 leeches from you a couple of months ago. one that i bought was supposed to be a preganat one.it seems to me that there is no differance in any of them. if or when is this one to have her cocoon?

A. Hello, did you purchase moss and a hanging bed for the pregnant leech to crawl in and out of the half-full and half-wet moss? If you do not create this type of environment for the pregnant leeches, they will absorb the pregnancy. Furthermore, if you failed to do this, combine all 3 leeches together with these conditions, and they will mate this spring and hopefully another one will get pregnant.

Q. is it bad if i keep feeding my leeches liver

A. Leeches are not feed with liver, they are bloodsuckers, they only suck blood from live mammals.

Leeches.com

Q. If I feed my leeches liver can they get Salmonella? Can i put blood in a container will they drink it? Can i hold my leeches without them biting me? When pulling out a leech how do i get their suckers off?

A. Feeding pet leeches on liver is not a suitable practice, as bloodsucking leeches do not feed on anything, except suck blood from living mammals. Hirudo Leeches also do not "drink" blood from containers. Leeches can be handled without biting, if you move them around quickly in your hands. Their suckers can be unlatched easily by lifting them up gently with the tip of the fingernails. However, leeches that are already biting their host, cannot and should not be unlatched by force. It those cases, it is best to let them drink until they reach fullness and drop off on their own. Another unlatch method is to drop pure lemon juice on its front sucker, and the leech should release its grip immediately and crawl away from the lemon juice.

Q. I ordered a fed leech as a pet but would it still be safe to let it eat off my own blood when it's time for the next feeding? Or is there a risk?

A. Your pet leech can safely latch and feed on any mammal. Some people use frogs for feeding, among other living hosts. Hirudo Leeches can also live up to 1 year without feeding.

My English is not the best; regarding to include a note with my order, do you mean to write exactly and detailed, about my varicose veins situation? (so you will send me the right kind for me). Answer me. And.. is there some field on the website so i could write that note on?) Regarding the kind of leeches, the prices may vary.. so, how to order if I don?t know yet exactly the kind and number of leeches that I will order?) Q. Hello! I have been researching and preparing to purchase leeches from your site. I had one concern, however, regarding their care. I am planning on keeping them as pets, but bloodletting as their sole source of nutrients. My main concern lies in the fact that I do take birth control and I was wondering if this would stunt or harm the leeches in any way? I can't seem to find anything on the internet about this. Any insight would be absolutely lovely. And if my blood would be unsafe for them, might you recommend alternative methods to feeding leeches? Thank you in advance, I appreciate your help immensely!

A. Medications do not seem to affect leech feeding, as the leeches adjust to just about any condition without this affecting their health and wellbeing.?
